Lionel Trains Polar Express Train Set

Holiday Toy

Lionel Trains Polar Express Train Set

The train puffs smoke and makes convincing whistle sounds as it makes its way around the track.

Superbly Crafted Toy with Easy Set Up
The pieces of the train set are easily assembled, from the smooth linking of the cars, to setting up the track. The instructions are sometimes vague: for example, the train needs to charge before it runs, but we didn't understand that from the instructions and spent some frustrating minutes wondering why the train wouldn't move. Otherwise, the toy is a delight to set up and play with. Most of the parts are reassuringly heavy and durable, including the impressive transformer that powers the train. There is a small learning curve associated with learning to drive the train, especially for electric train novices, but kids will quickly catch on with their parents' help. The small figurines that can ride atop the cars are a nice entertaining feature. However, they are small and can get easily lost, as well as pose a choking hazard to younger kids.
Attention to Detail Creates a Lifelike Experience
The Polar Express has some especially nice features, like the smoke fluid that you can add to it so that it emits puffs of smoke as it chugs along. The realistic-sounding steam whistle is also a great touch. The transformer that powers the train is heavy and solid, with a big throttle that's easy for little hands to operate.
Testers found the train easy to assemble, and once charged, it went smoothly around the oval track. At 60 inches long and 40 inches wide, the track is not particularly big, but you can extend it by purchasing more track pieces from Lionel (sold separately). In general, we enjoyed the old-fashioned quality in the train set's well-crafted parts, as well the numerous design details (such as interior lighting, retro styling, and a working headlight) that made the Polar Express come alive.
What's in the Box
1 die-cast steam engine; 1 coal tender; 2 coach passenger cars; 1 observation car; 1 CW-80 transformer; Santa's Bell; 4 articulated movie characters; 1 bottle smoke fluid; 40- x 60-inch oval track (with 8 curved sections; 3 straight sections; 1 power terminal section); and instruction book.

Cool! The brand new boy and girl themed Advent Calendars! Unicorn in Fairy World Advent Calendar comes with a backdrop that can be hung on the wall. The Advent boxes are numbered and can be easily hung on the backdrop. Directions are included on how to set up the calendar and which items go in each box. This Christmas set has background for imaginative play once all the boxes are opened. Recommended for ages 4 and up.

I got this for my daughter back in September I believe and only paid about $20 for it. She loves it. I just noticed several sellers are now listing it for an outrageous price of $89 and up. Do not drain your wallet here as I have heard playmobil has it for about $16.99 and another store I just checked recently (cornertoystore.com) has it for $18.99. Those sellers should be ashamed of themselves and should be worried about the Karma that will come back to them.

These advent calendars are great but they are 16.99 on playmobil.com
Please research before buying anything on amazon around the holidays. Vendors like to increase prices!

LEGO Star Wars Character Encyclopedia

LEGO Star Wars Character Encyclopedia
Includes exclusive LEGO® Star Wars® minifigure!

DK is bringing two of the world's most popular properties together again in a fun, chunky format that kids and adults are sure to love! This illustrated encyclopedia features in-depth profiles showing interesting and never-before-seen elements of all your favorite LEGO® Star Wars® minifigures.

With more than 400 captivating images and tons of fascinating facts, the LEGO® Star Wars® Character Encyclopedia is sure to keep both LEGO lovers and Star Wars fans reading for hours!

This is a very nice book that is a great follow-on to the Lego Star Wars "The Visual Dictionary". "The Character Encyclopedia" includes the Han Solo minifigure complimenting the Luke Skywalker that came with "The Visual Dictionary" book. Great for collectors of the Lego Star Wars minifigs.

I bought this for my 10-yr old son who is a big fan of Star Wars and the Legos. He takes the Han Solo minifig out to look at it and then places it back into the book when he is done. The holder built into the book is designed so that you can lift up the plastic flap that contains the figure and continue using it as a holder. Make sure you release the tape from the bottom as the "hinge" is at the top.

The size of the book is smaller than the previous released DK books. It measures 7 3/8" wide by 9 3/8" tall. This is actually a really good size for the information contained on the pages of the book. Each page is dedicated to one Minifig in the Star Wars sets. Here are a few page features:

* A nice description of the character and their role/function in Star Wars
* Each minifig description is cross referenced to the sets which they appear
* Each minifig description has descriptions of any released variations (if any)
* A very nice photograph of the minifig taking up most of the page
* Bits of trivia regarding the design

The index also contains a nice reference for all the set numbers that the minifig can be found.

This first edition contains all the figures that are currently available in the 2011 Star Wars sets.

One interesting note is that this book is missing one of the promotional minifigs released earlier in 2011 year (or was it late 2010). That was the Shadow ARF Trooper which was a Lego Store promotion. My son and I got one and I was interested in finding a description of it. It is interesting since the book mentions limited release minifigs such as the chrome gold C-3PO and bronze Boba Fett. I wonder if folks noticed any other missing figures.

Regardless, this is a very nice book and missing an obscure limited release figure doesn't detract from this book. It would give the publisher an opportunity for a 2nd edition in a few years when Lego releases even more minifigs.

Perfect for the Lego Maniac
This review is from: LEGO LEGO® City Advent Calendar 7553 (Toy)
This is the annual Lego Advent calendar. Just like previous years, there are 24 little compartments with a different Lego toy for each day leading up to Christmas. All total there are 232 pieces. Each toy is simple to assemble; there is an assembled picture on the back of each door.

This year they did a little more Christmas than previous years. Santa, Christmas tree, and somebody carrying presents are the theme. A car, snowmobile and a fisherman make up the remainder. They also included a bigger piece this time - four days are put together to make a Police station. It's a nice touch, the building. The odd part is a Police station for Christmas?

All 24 days come together to make a single scene. After Christmas, the toys make a nice addition to anybody's City collection.

The box is the same size as previous years. The cardboard is not very rugged; it's pretty standard Lego box issue. I've posted some pictures of the box and tray. It's possible some of the doors will get torn when opening them. I imagine if somebody was really careful, they could put the toys back and save it for next year. But then they'd miss out on a year of playing with the toys and the new 2012 version.

Every Lego Maniac will love this calendar. Even though my boys are much older now, we've enjoyed these sets for the past bunch of years. Heck, Dad gets a big kick out of the daily opening and building.

There is another Advent calendar this year. If it doesn't sell out and become outrageously expensive, the Star Wars set is rather cool: LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar (7958)
The MSRP for the City Advent calendar is $35.
