Fine Art Models' Bucyrus-Erie Crane

Fine Art Models spent two years developing this locomotive from the original plans, with the intention of making a benchmark model. While they knew they could build the model with no compromise in detail, the question remained whether they could build it to function just as well. The result is the most complex, high-tech train model ever built by anyone - ever. The 1:32 scale, limited edition Bucyrus-Erie Crane is made entirely of brass with scale, 42-strand stainless steel cables. All of the doors and hatches open to reveal what belongs behind them. To enable the crane to lift loads, the chassis has been made from a solid piece of billet brass. When lifting light loads, the crane can be anchored to the rails with the use of special clamps. When lifting heavy loads, outriggers (in the center and at the ends of each platform) all telescope out. In addition, six jackscrews, positioned on timbers, stabilize the crane. Perhaps the most ingenious feature of this crane is that when any function takes place, the twin steam pistons function and the gear assemblies rotate - just as they did on the real crane (the winding drums are operated by miniature Swiss-made motors located inside the drums). Also included with each Crane is a sound system synchronized to the steam-operated crane in action. It also has a lifting whistle, which must be blown before a load is lifted.

Product Features

  • 30" L x 5" W x 8" H

Fine Art Models' PRR B6sb Locomotive

Often referred to as the ÒShifter,Ó the most successful switcher ever built by the Pennsylvania Railroad was the B6. The original class B6 was built in Altoona Works from 1903-1913 with PRRÕs trademark square-shouldered Belpaire firebox and 56-inch drivers. They were constructed as saturated steam engines, rebuilt with superheaters later as class B6s, and had piston valves and Stephenson valve gear. The next version built was the B6sa, of which 55 were built at Altoona during 1913-1914. These had radial-stay fireboxes, common elsewhere but rare on the Pennsylvania, and they replaced the Stephenson gear with more modern Walschaerts valve gear. Steam delivery pipes were outside, like all other PRR modern power. All were built superheated. Finally, during 1916-1920, 238 class B6sb were built. These were the final, definitive type, and had a Belpaire firebox, but were otherwise little changed from the B6sa. The final 97 locomotives had piston valves mounted outboard of the cylinders, instead of inbound as previously built, giving the cylinder assemblies an outward cant at the top, rather than inward. All B6sa nd B6sb locomotives were retrofitted with power reverse to make the frequent back-and-forth of switching quicker and easier. The last PRR locomotive in active service was #5244, leased to Union Transportation of New Egypt, New Jersey until July, 1959.The only surviving B6sb, #1670, was saved in the PRRÕs historic collection at Northumberland, Pennsylvania and was donated to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.

Product Features

  • 32" L x 6.5" W x 4" H
  • Limited to only 30 pieces, this Fine Art Models B6sb is built in a scale of 1:32 and is made entirely of brass, nickel silver and stainless steel.
  • The Fine Art Models B6sb includes an operating reversing gear and engineer controlled lighting, whistle, and bell. In addition, it has three circuit boards, all with no wires leading from the locomotive to the tender, just the prototypical hoses. And, with the sealed bearing drive system, only one ampere of power is needed to move it.
  • The engineer-controlled features include the Headlight, Marker and Tender Lights, Cab Light, Automatic and Manual Whistle, Grade Crossing Whistle, Automatic and Manual Bell, Sound of Water filling the Tender, Sound of Coal Loading, Sound of Coupling Action, and Air compressors.
  • Each Fine Art Models B6sb train model comes complete with a Black Walnut roller base, which gives the appearance of the model sitting on hand laid ballasted track, and a leaded glass display case. And the digital operating and sound system allows you to run the model in place on the roller base or on a track.

ROCO HO Scale Digital Starter Set with Sound and Operating Coach Doors

What happens when digital technology couples up to precision model trains? A starter set like no other. Roco has created an amazing HO model passenger train with digital control system and 26 pieces of track (making a large loop over 90” long x 35” wide) so you have everything you need to begin your own European model railroad. Thanks to digital control, you can raise and lower the pantographs on top of the smooth-running, highly detailed model of the Class E10 electric loco, plus turn its lights on and off (even inside the cab). Of course there’s sound too, so you can blow the whistle and hear the sounds recorded from a real locomotive. But once you reach the station the fun really begins: With the push of a button you open all the doors of the coaches on one side or the other. Take time to look inside and see the seats in first class (blue coach) and second class (green coaches). When it’s time to depart, you can close the doors, with each making a distinctive sound until the conductor blows his whistle and the last door slams shut. At night you can turn the interior lights on too. Roco model railway products are known internationally for their fine detail and groundbreaking innovations. Carrying on a tradition started in 1960, Roco employs state-of-the-art technology in their European factories to produce unique products that impress through their precision and quality, revealing Roco’s passion for model trains.

Lionel USRA 2-6-6-2 Wheeling and Lake Erie

Commissioned in 1917 by order of President Woodrow Wilson, the United States Railroad Administration (USRA) was charged to organize the efforts of America's railroads as they provided needed supplies for the war. After World War I, the goals of the USRA were shifted to the following commerce-related endeavors: standardize design for speed of construction, standardize components, reduce part shortages and cut railroad costs. Embracing this concept, the Chesapeake & Ohio and Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroads ordered the USRA 2-6-6-2 Mallet. The first Mallet was delivered to the W and LE in 1919 for the grand price of 71,966.94. Later, Nickel Plate leased Mallets from the W and LE and renumbered them for use on the NPR rails. Another in a line of highly detailed, articulated locomotives, the new USRA 2-6-6-2 captures the look, feel and power of the original. Decked out with the Odyssey System for speed control, real-life 2-6-6-2 sounds and Lionel quality, this is the steam locomotive to have for 2001. Don't miss out on this spectacular steamer! Lionel USRA 2-6-6-2 Wheeling and Lake Erie

FAM Passenger Car Reference

Over the past several years I have had numerous requests for information pertaining to the O scale passenger cars produced by Fine Art Models, those produced for Lionel as well as those sold under the Fine Art Models name. These models remain as the finest passenger cars ever offered in O scale, but it seems that many do not know the facts behind their production. I provide the following information to help those interested in these cars to understand exactly what was produced and to lay the ground work for considering the requests that I have received to complete the work that was started by Fine Art Models.

The first O scale passenger cars produced by Fine Art Models were for Lionel, there were twenty-six different cars of the New York Central '20th Century Limited' produced. There was also a plan to build a series of Pennsylvania Railroad 'Broadway Limited' cars for Lionel, but those plans were canceled before the cars were built. The following is a link to download a 'PDF' version of the original Lionel brochure:

Following the production for Lionel, Fine Art Models produced a new series of '20th Century Limited' cars and the 'Broadway Limited' cars that had been planned for Lionel. While there were fewer versions produced of the '20th Century Limited' under the Fine Art Models label, the series was completed with improvements over the original cars produced for Lionel. The 'Broadway Limited' cars were produced at the same time, but there were differences in the consists due to the PRR utilizing heavy-weight style head-end cars instead of the new light weight style cars used for the '20th Century Limited'. Unfortunately, the heavy-weight head-end cars were never produced. In addition, two of the cars produced for the PRR 'Broadway Limited' train set were done incorrectly by the builder, the two cars were the observation car and the mid-train lounge. The following is a link to download a 'PDF' version of the original Fine Art Models brochure for their O scale passenger cars:

The requests received have been for the heavy-weight baggage and diner cars and also for correct versions of the observation and mid-train lounge cars, all for the 'Broadway Limited' car set. The question remains exactly what level of support there is for such projects and for the possibility of expanding the production to include additional car versions, such as the light-weight style diner cars. If these cars are of interest to you, be sure to let me know as that will certainly impact the potential of moving forward with these projects.(http://www.kohs.com)

Fine Art Models' NYC 20th Century Limited Observation Car

It was promoted as The Greatest Train in the World. Its extra-fare opulence, comfort and reliability were intended to impress, and they did.

Since 1902, the flagship of the New York Central had been the New YorkÐChicago 20th Century Limited, but the greatest Century of all was the 1938 streamliner styled by Henry Dreyfuss. In 1937, the New York Central was among the first railroads to enter the streamliner era with its ClevelandÐDetroit Mercury. Once that trainÕs appeal was established, the 20th Century Limited became the next natural candidate for streamlining.

The NYC hired the 32-year-old Dreyfuss to style this first, all-private-room train in America using Pullman car designs shared with the Pennsylvania RailroadÕs contemporary Broadway Limited. The Century appeared in tasteful tones of gray and blue offset by complementary tan, copper, and rust colors. Dining and lounge interiors were sophisticated with rounded shapes and surfaces. The diner was as elegant as a four-star Manhattan restaurant with other on-board services equally impeccable. The train had a secretary, a telegraph, valet service and barber shop. A red carpet was rolled out from the concourse to train-side for boarding passengers.efore their introduction, more than 100,000 people walked through Century train sets on display in both New York and Chicago.

Then, at 5 p.m. on June 15, 1930, the first of the new trains departed simultaneously from the two cities the same hour at which the first two new Broadway Limiteds departed. Their arrival times were likewise identical. At first, the Century operated as a 13-car train, but later expanded to 17 cars and operated in two sections.
